- Yıl 1995 ya da 96’ydı, Alsancak İzmir’de bulunan Denizcilik İdaresi’ne gidip yük gemilerinde çalışmak için başvurdum. Kabul edilmedim. İşin doğrusu, beni ciddiye aldıklarını bile zannetmiyorum. Yıllar boyunca zaman zaman acaba kabul edilseydim, gemilerle çıksaydım nasıl bir hayatım olurdu diye düşündüm, kendimi orada gördüğüm de oldu... Sonra yedi roman yazdım, onlar aracılığıyla uzaklara yolculuklar yaptım. Zaman geçti, 2023 yılının Ekim ayında İsrail Filistin’e girdi ve bütün dünyanın önünde bir katliam başladı. Bir soykırım, acımasız bir yok ediş. İki ay boyunca televizyonun önün- de ağladım. Artık delireceğimi hissettiğim bir anda “Kalk Aslı,” dedim. “Bunun sonu yok, ağlayarak olmayacak, bir şey yapman lazım.” Benim yapmayı becerebildiğim tek şey var, o da yazmak. Bu duygu beni bir yolculuğa çıkardı. Oturdum, Batı “mede- niyetinin” ikiyüzlülüğüne ve zaaflarla dolu “insanlık” mef- humuna dair bir küfür olarak da görülebilecek bu kitabı yazdım. Flamingolar Pembedir’deki karakterim Bahriyeli’yi aldım, zamanında binemediğim o gemiye koydum ve bir yolculuğa çıkardım. Onu Afrika kıyılarına götürdüm.
