How does it compare to the Monster Inspiration Active Noise Canceling Headphones?
Respuesta: Not sure about the Inspiration Actives but I have the regular Monster Inspiration over-ear headphones and they are just as capable and impressive as my ath-m50x. The people who are commenting saying the 50x is so much better than the Inspirations are showing true ignorance. The sound stage is actually slightly better on the Inspirations. Monster makes a wide range of headphones not all of which are just Beats clones. For people who own headphones like the Inspirations, the HD558's, JBL S500's... you will be disappointed if you think the ath-m50x will blow you away. -

This model has no battery (replaceable or rechargeable), right? Does it tend to drain the battery of your iPod / iPhone rapidly, to run its processor?
Respuesta: Headphones don't drain batteries. They just talked the juice from the headphone amp. I think with the agent of so many consumer grade headphones with noise cancellation or built in amplifiers we have a slew of people completely confused and misinformed with the basics of audio gear. These are the same. people that would have to call a computer tech to plug in computer monitor to a computer. These are the same people that will give a bad review to ga reat product simply because that don't understand the products intended use. -

Is there a reasonably priced and easily installed earcup padding replacement parts kit available? Bad experience with dissolving AT earcups.
Respuesta: I use Wicked Cushions, but NOT the large ones they advertise for M50X headphones, rather the ones for Sony MDR7506. Forget all the warnings blah blah from WC about them being only for MDR7506, those earpads fit AT M40/50X headphones and most importantly SOUND almost EXACTLY LIKE OEM AT pads. No loss of bass but since the interior layer over the driver is thicker, high end may be ever so slightly attenuated. I quite like it. So much I got another pair for my M40X -

How's the frequency range? I thought I read the specs somewhere, but can't find em now... How do these compare to the $500+ Sennheiser HD models?
Respuesta: Not as balanced as HD600, somewhat similarly bass and treble boosted like HD650. Annoying 10kHz frequency peak like any other closed-back headphone. HD600 and HD650 boast far higher resolution and much better clarity, bigger and more accurate stereo field (though they don't excel at this like AKG's K701 or Hifiman orthodynamic headphones), they're meant for high-end playback systems, M50x is just a cheap, decent monitor (though not as good as M40x and M70x at that, in my experience). -

I am trying to decided between the ATH-M50x and the Voda Crossfade M 100. I listen mainly to jazz and classical. Any advice?
Respuesta: Personally, I think neither of these would be a great choice for jazz and classical music. But between the two, the M50X would be the better choice. The bass on the M100 (although wonderful!) is too strong for these genres of music and would overpower them. Personally, I would check out Sennheisser's open-back headphones (anything in your budget) or open back headphones by Beyerdynamic. Hope that helps! -

what is the difference between professional headphones and professional monitor headphones?
Respuesta: Covad's thoughtful response is spot on. 'professional monitor headphones' are a sub-set of 'professional headphones'. 'Monitor' headphones are used primarily by the talent for tracking and by the engineer in the control room monitoring during the record process; or during live recording or any other professional sound work application (DJ, broadcast, etc.). The other sub-set of 'professional headphones' is 'professional analytical/reference headphones'. This subset is almost always open back (think AKG K701/K702; and the Beyer DT880 Professional) and used primarily during the mixing and mastering process; they may also be used by the producer or engineer in the control room during the recording process. -

Are these overkill for an iPod?
Respuesta: I don't think it's overkill at all. If you want a better musical experience, then go right ahead. But make sure you have some high quality audio files before trying them out. Better sound quality going in equals better sound coming out and that's even more true when it comes to these headphones. These will only emphasize the bad sound of your files if they are low quality. The better the source, the better the sound.Oh and speaking of source, I also recommend getting a portable headphone amp like this http://amzn.com/B005HJWWW8 and a Line Out Dock cable like this http://amzn.com/B005N6ZAT2 because the internal amp of the iPod will most likely be holding these headphones back. The Line Out Dock cable bypasses the internal headphone amp and feeds the pure line out signal directly into the better, more powerful, and higher quality external amp. -

In order to get maximum sound quality should this be used on a computer? or can it be used on a phone and still get quality sound?
Respuesta: Most phones have low quality DACS and amps; they are anything but audiophile quality. You will NOT need a separate DAC for the ATH M50X's if your computer or other device has a quality DAC chip built in, like the Cirrus Logic 4206BCNZ used in some of the newer and better Macs. Otherwise, buy the $99 Schiit Modi 2 or $149 Modi 2 DAC, depending on your needs. The least expensive audiophile-quality headphone amp that I have heard -- and actually used with these ATH M50X's -- is the $99 Schiit modi 2. And, of course, your setup will only be as good as its the source material, so use lossless files for best sound quality.
