Emil Gilels (Artist) Format: Audio CD Character Pieces Editorial Review
**** The recording of Grieg’s *Lyric Pieces* performed by Emil Gilels has garnered significant acclaim for its breathtaking interpretation and the intimate atmosphere it evokes. Critics unanimously praise Gilels' ability to allow the music to shine without overwhelming it with personal flair, creating a sublime listening experience that feels as if he is performing directly for the listener. His light and lively touch brings out the charm in each piece, and the engineering captures this essence beautifully. Many listeners have described the collection as revelatory and a must-have for enthusiasts of classical piano music. Despite minor discussions regarding the selection of pieces—such as the absence of the beloved "Wedding Day at Trollhaugen"—the performances are Consistently regarded as exceptional. There’s a delightful authenticity in Gilels' music-making that makes the collection feel alive and engaging. However, a dissenting voice pointed out the nature of the compositions themselves, reminding audiences that these "minor pieces" may not warrant the same 5-star status as larger, more substantial works of the repertoire. Nevertheless, the overall Consensus highlights the recording as a beautiful homage to Grieg's artistry, enhanced by Gilels’ skillful performance, making it a worthwhile addition for anyone seeking melodic and enchanting classical piano music. **
