The regulator can be used either way up and can work with any first stage, provided the regulator is 3/8 fitting. The ABS regulator is not designed to work correctly with overbalanced regulators and can leak around 75ft. The Apecks Egress Octo is a suitable alternative to the ABS regulator. The Octo hose is made of rubber. The ABS regulator product page indicates that it could perform better when used with a Titan regulator or a Core regulator.
