  • Stephen Crane wrote his most striking stories and told the invisible face of the city between 1892-1894, when he resided in New York. Published in 1896, George's Mother is also set in the Bowery region, which was known for crime and corruption at that time. It tells the story of the daily lives of a mother who is worried about her son and George Kelcey, who actually values his mother, even though he has a careless attitude. On the one hand, his mother's struggle with George's tendency towards alcohol, and on the other hand, George's nightlife and church dilemma form the basis of the text. The old woman and her son reside in the same building as the Johnsons in Street Girl Maggie, and we even cross paths with familiar characters. However, George and his mother have a more loving relationship than their neighbors. The mother is constantly curious about and protecting her son, and the son dreams of a relatively independent and free life. Stephen Crane became one of the important representatives of the realism movement with his works about ordinary people and life in the suburbs. He uses a symbolic and extremely ironic style when describing the individual's helplessness in the face of bad and unfavorable social conditions. Show more
